MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. These scans use a magnetic field and radio waves to cause body tissues in the area being scanned to send out tiny radio signals. Each type of tissue sends out a different signal. When the system converts these signals into a computerized image, the result is a clear, exceptionally detailed “picture” of the area of interest.

Radiology Regional offers both 1.5T and 3T scanners. The T refers to Tesla, or the strength of the magnet in the MRI scanner.

The MRI exam is particularly useful in examining the entire musculoskeletal system, internal organs in the abdomen and pelvis, and the brain and spinal cord. These detailed images allow radiologists to detect problems previously unseen with other diagnostic procedures. This can eliminate the need for a more invasive procedure or operation.

While MRI and CT scanners may have a similar appearance at first glance, these exams are not the same. CT, or computed tomography scans, are highly detailed, computerized x-rays. MRI scans do not expose you to any radiation.

What can I expect during my MRI exam?

When scheduling your appointment, you will be asked a series of questions to help our team determine the best approach for you. Because MRI uses strong a magnetic field, it is critical that you tell your scheduler if you have any of the following:

  • Pacemaker
  • Aneurysm clips in the brain
  • Inner ear implants
  • Metal fragments in an eye or anywhere in your body
  • Implanted device of any kind

Your healthcare provider may order your scan with contrast – this is a simple dye to highlight certain areas or body parts. If you are or believe you may be claustrophobic, talk with us about that during scheduling – we will do our best to ease your concerns and schedule you accordingly.

You can also view any preparation here and review our patient forms.

After you check-in at the scheduled office, our MRI technologist will escort you into the scan room to position you on the table of the scanner. Through our intercom system, you will be able to hear and talk to the technologist who will be monitoring the scan from the computer room. During the exam, you will hear a knocking sound from the MRI system that ranges from barely audible to quite noticeable, which is perfectly normal.

Most MRI scans require an order or script from a medical provider. Typical scan time is approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on the exam ordered.
