CT stands for computerized tomography, and is also commonly called a CAT Scan. Since its introduction in 1974, CT has revolutionized medical care by providing detailed images of the body and disease processes. A CT scan uses an x-ray beam that rotates around a specific area in the body to generate a detailed image of the body’s internal structure.

Using a series of pictures, often called “slices,” CT imaging creates a three-dimensional view, clearly showing both bone and soft tissue. Slices refer to the number of images taken per rotation of the scanner – the higher the number, the more detail captured. With the ability to capture these advanced 3D images, CT scans can help reduce invasive exploratory procedures, such as surgery.

What can I expect during my CT exam?

When scheduling your appointment, you will be asked a series of questions to help our team determine the best approach for you. Your healthcare provider may order your scan with contrast – this is a simple dye to highlight certain areas or body parts.

You can also view any preparation here and review our patient forms.

After you check in at the scheduled office, our CT technologist will escort you into the scan room to position you on the table of the scanner.

Most CT scans require an order or script from a medical provider. Typical scan time is approximately 15-45 minutes, depending on the exam ordered.
