Women across Southwest Florida choose Radiology Regional Women’s Imaging Centers for advanced breast imaging.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. These scans use a magnetic field and radio waves to cause body tissues in the area being scanned to send out tiny radio signals.

Breast MRI is used as a supplemental screening tool to complement an annual mammogram. Most often, breast MRI is added to the screening protocol for women with an identified high risk of developing breast cancer. It produces hundreds of cross-sectional images of the inside of the breast to give radiologists a clear and detailed picture and help identify changes in tissue.

Breast MRI can also be used to evaluate for multifocal or multicentric cancer, identify surgical margins, assess tumor recurrence, monitor chemotherapy or brachytherapy progress, and determine implant integrity.

What can I expect during my Breast MRI exam?

When scheduling your appointment, you will be asked a series of questions to help our team determine the best approach for you. Because MRI uses strong a magnetic field, it is critical that you tell your scheduler if you have any of the following:

  • Pacemaker
  • Aneurysm clips in the brain
  • Inner ear implants
  • Metal fragments in an eye or anywhere in your body
  • Implanted device of any kind

You should also let the scheduler know if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are breast feeding.

You can also view any preparation here and review our patient forms.

After you check in at the scheduled office, our MRI technologist will escort you into the scan room. You will lie on your stomach on a scanning table and your breasts will be suspended in a padded holder which contains coils that detect the magnetic signal. Through our intercom system, you will be able to hear and talk to the technologist who will be monitoring the scan from the computer room.

After an initial series of images have been taken, contrast may be used – this is a simple dye that can highlight certain areas in the breast. If you receive contrast, additional images will then be taken.

Typical scan time is approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on the exam ordered.
