At Radiology Regional, we’re committed to advancing diagnostic imaging to provide more accurate, timely, and personalized care. One of the most powerful tools now available in the fight against prostate cancer is the PSMA PET/CT — a cutting-edge imaging technology designed to detect prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-positive cancer cells with greater accuracy and higher sensitivity than conventional imaging.
What is a PSMA PET/CT Scan?
PSMA PET/CT uses a radioactive tracer in conjunction with positron emission tomography (PET), and computed tomography (CT) for men with prostate cancer who:
Are being evaluated for initial definitive therapy due to suspected metastasis, or
Have a suspected recurrence based on rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels.
By targeting PSMA—a protein found on over 90% of prostate cancer cells—the scan delivers high-resolution images of prostate tumors, lymph nodes, and metastatic disease sites. This gives physicians critical insight into the extent and spread of cancer, helping guide treatment decisions with increased precision.
Why It Matters
Even after successful initial treatment, prostate cancer can return. In fact, up to 50% of patients experience a recurrence within 10 years. Detecting cancer early and accurately is essential to determining the most effective next steps in treatment.
Compared to standard imaging modalities such as MRI, CT, or bone scans, PSMA PET/CT scans offer improved sensitivity, particularly when PSA levels are low. This enables detection of smaller metastatic lesions and earlier intervention, which can be crucial to improving outcomes.
“The advancements in diagnostic imaging like PSMA PET/CT allows us to pinpoint the location and progression of prostate cancer with unprecedented accuracy.” says Dr. Yamil Fourzali, board-certified Nuclear Medicine physician at Radiology Regional. “This is a major step forward in enhancing patient care and tailoring treatment plans that are truly personalized.”
