Spider Vein Therapy

Spider Veins Before & After Therapy

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are enlarged veins near the surface of the skin that appear blue, purple or red.  Shaped like a spider's web, these veins appear in clusters of fine lines, commonly on the feet, ankles, thighs and sometimes the face.

Sometimes a cluster of spider veins may appear as a red or purple patch called blushing or matting, resembling a bruise.

Most spider veins are not symptomatic and are considered a cosmetic problems.  Some spider veins are associated with a burning or dull pain in the area.

What causes spider veins?

Several factors can contribute to the development of spider veins including:

  • Genetics - most women with spider veins have female relatives with the condition
  • Pregnancy - due to increased blood volume and fluctuations in hormones
  • Prolonged sitting or standing - causes increased pressure to develop in the leg veins
  • Injury - bruising can lead to enlarged veins
  • Vein conditions - spider veins are sometimes caused by nearby varicose veins

What treatments are available?
  • Sclerotherapy - a very tiny needle is used to inject a solution (called a sclerosing agent) that causes the vein's walls to stick together. Over the course of a few weeks the veins close up and are absorbed by the body so that they are no longer visible.
  • Laser Therapy - laser is applied to the skin over the spider vein. The laser energy causes the veins to coagulate and shrink.   It is most effective of small to medium spider veins.  Usually a combination of sclerotherapy and laser therapy is the most effective treatment for spider veins.
